Most people loathe jean shopping but unfortunately pretty much everyone has to do it. Since the mid 1960s jeans have been a fashion staple after James Dean wore them in the movie Rebel Without A Cause, making them a symbol of rebellion.1

Since then, the styles have changed from straight-fit to 1970’s bell-bottoms to drainpipes in the 1980s and then the rise of the boot-cut or baggy fit in the 1990s. Now, you can get hold of pretty much any style you want, which means you can find jeans to fit every body shape.

However, even with this increase in style availability, finding a decent fitting pair of jeans is still not really a pleasurable experience unless maybe you are Kate Moss or David Beckham, then pretty much anything will look good. So how do you know what style is good for your shape?

If you have an hour-glass shape, go for a boot-cut fit to slim down your thighs and hips. If you are slim and ’straight-up-straight-down’ skinny jeans will work best for you. A classic, straight fit works best on an athletic build for both for men and women. If you have fairly small hips in comparison to your legs, then baggy or ‘boyfriend’ jeans show off a slim waist whilst hiding less than slim legs.

You can dress up or dress down any of these styles. Women know that a good pair of skinnies and high heels are perfect for a night out partying. On the other hand, worn with flat pumps or trainers and an oversized t-shirt skinnies can be perfect for a stylish off-duty look. Plus so called ‘boyfriend-fit’ jeans for women can say classic casual or uber-trendy chic when combined with a shirt or blouse.
